City of Rayville

The City of Rayville was the first American vessel sunk in World War II (Nov 9th 1940) by a German mine laid in an extensive mine field some 7 nautical miles off Cape Otway by the German Raider PINGUIN, a motor vessel of 7766 tons.

She was built in Tampa, Florida USA 1920 Converted to diesel 1927.
weighed 5,883 tons. Length, 401.9 feet;beam, 54.2feet
Now resting in 82 metres

A 4 hour dive is a long time hanging onto the drifting deco bars, that ended up 4 Klm away from the shot line!
